Industry and government are using the massive and growing volume of the Alberta tarsands tailings ponds as justification for a new set of regulations – regulations which could allow for tailings pond water to be improperly treated and released into the Athabasca River.
It is of critical importance that tailings are not released into the Athabasca River. These substances are already impacting downstream communities. Indigenous community leaders and members are feeling the cumulative impacts of climate change and upstream industrial activity on their health and traditional cultural practices.
It is unacceptable to continue to accept the sacrifice of northern Indigenous communities and lands to industry profit. Join thousands of Canadians in taking action today – email Minister Steven Guilbeault and demand tailings effluent regulations that do not allow tailings dumping into the Athabasca River.
