The 2025 federal election is taking place at an unprecedented time in our country’s history. President Donald Trump’s aggressive actions are deeply offensive to Canadians and threaten to impact every community. The President’s recent actions have changed global politics, and the resistance is building.
This election, we must ensure that our democracy is not overwhelmed by the power of billionaires and the disinformation wars they propagandize. We have seen the disturbing rise of right-wing populism here and across the world, and the Council of Canadians has developed a comprehensive framework in response.
The Canada We Want outlines four key themes:
- Make Life Affordable
- Keep It Public
- Shape a Secure Future
- Raise Our Voices
We’ve invited people across the country to engage with friends, family and neighbours by holding “kitchen table” conversations to discuss the political moment. We are holding training sessions and have materials created to support that effort.
When President Trump came to power and started threatening our country, everything changed. With most Canadians now focused on the external threat to sovereignty and economy, we issued a call to Unite for The Canada We Want based on tangible responses to the threats, and we warned that:
“Powerful business interests will try to use this crisis to further their own agenda. The leaders of corporate Canada have made it clear that they want to accommodate the Trump regime by cutting corporate taxes, increasing arms spending, gutting environmental standards and shrinking government. We should reject their bad advice.”
History shows us that federal conservative governments have a proven track record of dismantling public services to boost corporate profits and enrich the wealthy few at the expense of the services that support the rest of us. We cannot afford to allow that to happen.
The Canada We Want and Unite for the Canada We Want can serve as benchmark guides to judge the promises of politicians seeking our vote in this crucial election.
Every one of us needs to get involved in this effort by raising our voices in our communities. It’s about more than just voting – we are all called upon to help shape the debate and the outcome of this election.
In the process, we can build the connections and networks that will prepare our movements to take on the challenges facing Canadians in these uncertain times.
