Pass the Sustainable Jobs Act

Tell the federal government to stop stalling and pass the Sustainable Jobs Act

The Prime Minister needs to hear from you about the Sustainable Jobs Act.

Despite assurances that the bill is a government priority, the Trudeau government has yet to schedule it for a third reading in the House of Commons. With only a limited number of sitting weeks left in Parliament before the summer break, this could prevent it from receiving Royal Assent in time to begin the work mandated by the Bill before the next election.

Tell the federal government to stop stalling and pass the Sustainable Jobs Act.

This bill is the Trudeau government’s response to the long-standing demand for just transition legislation. While it’s not the full legislation we’d hoped for, it’s an important step towards making sure that Canada’s approach to workforce, regional, and economic development aligns with our climate goals.

But progress of the bill through Parliament has been hampered by Conservative Party members at every turn – including through the addition of more than 200 frivolous amendments that will take several days of Parliamentary time to vote on.

Conservative members of the committee reviewing the bill also managed to sneak in a worrisome amendment that would push any deadlines for climate action to 2040 – more than 15 years from now. It’s essential that the government support proposed amendments that would re-instate the original 2025 deadline and change reporting dates accordingly.

Last month, we joined more than 10 major climate and labour organizations in calling on the federal government to expedite passage of the Sustainable Jobs Act. Will you add your voice in saying no to more delays?

Tell Trudeau to pass the Sustainable Jobs Act now.
