Two members of the Council of Canadians Calgary chapter – Reynold Reimer and Mary Nokleby – were arrested at a non-violent civil disobedience action yesterday outside the White House calling on US President Barack Obama to reject the Keystone XL pipeline.
The Council chapter activists were arrested alongside Dr. James Hansen, the head of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and a Columbia University professor, and about 140 other people. More than 500 people have been arrested over the past 9 days at peaceful sit-ins near the White House.
Council of Canadians chairperson Maude Barlow and climate justice/energy campaigner Andrea Harden are arriving in Washington, DC today. They are there this week to express solidarity with those gathered outside the White House, as well as to deliver a letter to Ambassador Gary Doer calling on him to stop lobbying in favour of the pipeline.
To support their message to Ambassador Doer, please respond to our action alert at http://canadians.org/action/2011/ambassador-doer.html.
