People across Canada already face a cost of living that keeps growing faster than our stagnant pay cheques, deepening inequality, the effects of devastating floods and fires, out of control military spending that robs our public services, and a universal publicly-funded health care system that is being throttled by successive provincial governments who are bent on privatization to benefit their corporate friends. Added to all this the crisis created by Donald Trump, heralded by his appalling inauguration speech, will have a serious impact on everyone in Canada.
Meanwhile Canada’s billionaires, who rely on our labour and spending for their vast wealth, have accumulated an additional $78 billion since the beginning of the pandemic while other Canadians struggle to pay for groceries. Political movements fueled by billionaires and disinformation are dividing us, while conservative politicians hope to ride this wave of anger, insecurity and anxiety to power.
But this doesn’t have to be our future.
We can build the alternative we know is possible: policies rooted in care, collective well-being, justice, and hope for a better tomorrow. This is the moment to come together, connect with people in our communities, and fight for the Canada we want.
On Tuesday, February 4, 2025, the Council of Canadians and the London and District Labour Council hosted an event: CALL TO ACTION: A Town Hall on the Future of Canada.
Speakers included:
Tina Stevens, London and District Labour Council
Jeff Hanks, London Health Coalition
Lizzie Ketchum, Fridays for Future
and others
