If Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s attack on the fundamental principles of Canadian medicare is allowed to go ahead, it will have grave repercussions not just in Alberta but across Canada.
It will drive up health care costs (physicians’ remuneration, etc.), drain staff away from public hospitals and open the door for other provinces to follow Smith’s two-tier lead. An attack on public healthcare anywhere is an attack on public healthcare everywhere.
The federal government must end its passivity and take swift action to uphold the Canada Health Act, which protects the public character of our health care system.
The good news is that cracks are beginning to show in the Liberal ranks over the federal government’s unwillingness to enforce the Canada Health Act. We need to show the MPs in the Liberal caucus like Dr. Eyolfson that Canadians have their backs.
