The federal government has repeatedly promised to phase out open net-pen salmon farms from the coastal waters of British Columbia by 2025 – but the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada has yet to release a plan to fulfill that mandate.
The time has come for the government to honour its promise, and to protect threatened wild salmon populations and remove dangerous and polluting fish farms from the ocean.
A recent federal court ruling has upheld the decision by former Fisheries Minister Joyce Murray not to renew the licenses for 15 open net-pen salmon farms in BC’s Discovery Islands.
Join us in seizing this opportunity by urging the current Fisheries Minister, Diane Lebouthillier, to end open net-pen fish farming once and for all.
