The Council of Canadians Comox Valley chapter is encouraging chapter activists to visit the Unist’ot’en action camp.

Chapter activist Alice de Wolff says, “We would like you to invite you to consider spending some time in British Columbia this summer. There is an unusual opportunity to turn your trip into a solidarity experience with one of BC’s first nations. The Unist’ot’en people are standing in the way of several new pipelines in mid-northern BC and are asking settler allies for assistance this summer.”

She adds, “You can find current and comprehensive information on the Unist’ot’en action camp website here.”

And de Wolff notes, “We understand that they are planning a summer camp, but the dates are not yet up on the site. However, they receive people throughout the year (ie. not at specific camp times) and you can contact them and ask if your dates would work. If you would like information from a Council of Canadians member who was there this winter, please contact us at the Comox Valley chapter and we will put you in touch.”

In July 2015, Council of Canadians activists Emma Lui and AJ Klein attended the 6th annual Unist’ot’en Action Camp. In a blog afterwards, Lui wrote, “Being at the Unist’ot’en camp was an incredibly moving experience and so inspiring to see people have the courage to put their bodies on the line to defend water, land and our climate.”

The Unist’ot’en (People of the Headwaters) Action Camp was established in 2010 on the path of the proposed 463-kilometre Pacific Trail fracked gas pipeline that would run between Summit Lake and a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal to be built in Kitimat by Chevron and Apache Canada Ltd.

The camp is also on the pathway of the now derailed Enbridge Northern Gateway tar sands pipeline.

The Council of Canadians supports the Unist’ot’en Action Camp and has participated in the large annual gatherings there since 2010.
