On May 1, Council of Canadians chapters across Ontario joined our labour allies and community groups to celebrate International Workers’ Day. As the province heads into an election, workers and communities rallied for a better Ontario and called for fair wages and better working conditions, paid sick days, affordable housing, stronger public services, and a just transition.
In London, the chapter gathered alongside others in Victoria Park with to call for more investments in public healthcare and the need to address the climate crisis. The chapter‘s water serpent made an appearance at the event and the CBC coverage that followed , calling attention to the need to protect water.
In Kitchener-Waterloo, despite the rainy weather, the community turned out for live music and good company. The Council of Canadians chapter tabled alongside the Waterloo Region Health Coalition and talked to the public about the need for strong public health care, a just transition, and the need to take action this provincial election.
In Hamilton, too, the rain did not dampen the community’s spirit. Folks from both the Council of Canadians chapter and Hamilton 350 talked to the community about their local campaign in the Flamborough – Glanbrook riding about Doug Ford’s sprawl and development-friendly agenda.

In Peterborough, members from both the Peterborough-Kawarthas and Northumberland chapters joined the community at an outdoor event at Confereration Park. The chapter helped distribute lawn signs from the Ontario Health Coalition to oppose healthcare privatization.
In Ottawa, Council of Canadians Climate and Social Justice Campaigner Dylan Penner spoke at the May Day rally about the need for a just transition that includes everyone. It was a joyful rally followed by a block party hosted by Community Solidarity Ottawa.
