Council of Canadians, CUPE, labour council hold public event in Windsor

The Windsor Star reports that, “A group of about 250 labour leaders, public service workers and concerned residents gathered at the Caboto Club Tuesday night to discuss the privatization of public services and how to chart a new political course for the city.”

“Sponsored by the Council of Canadians, the labour council and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, the event brought together CUPE economist Toby Sanger and former chief administrative officer Hilary Payne, who argued that contracting out public services won’t save the city any money.”

“CUPE national president Paul Moist drafted a long list of divisions in Windsor, including those between the city and local businesses, between city employees and administration, between the city and county and between the city and the province.”

Moist told those gathered last night, “A new industrial strategy for Windsor — one built by the city, the province, by business, and by labour would be a far better pursuit and use of our time than the current divisions in the community of Windsor. All of us want Windsor to grow and prosper, and this can only happen if the community works together.”
