After a frustrating end of 2023 with the Sustainable Jobs Act and a disappointing COP28, we’d encourage you to check out an important and hopeful resource put out by Sacred Earth Solar and Indigenous Climate Action late last year – “Just Transition Guide: Indigenous-led pathways towards equitable climate solutions and resiliency in the climate crisis”.
We know that a just transition must respect and center Indigenous and individual and collective duties, Indigenous collective and Indigenous rights, sovereignty, and Indigenous science and ecological knowledge. The removal of land and the destruction of Indigenous cultures through the ongoing processes of colonialism and capitalism are what got us into this climate crisis – and solutions to the crisis and a truly just transition must stop replicating this harm.
This incredible resource pushes us to be critical of the impacts of current, accepted climate solutions, and provides incredible examples of Indigenous communities that are without question the leaders of a just transition across so-called Canada. The guide also dives into key lessons shared by Indigenous communities as they move through what a just transition looks like for their communities.
