NEWS: California rejects GM food labelling

AFP reports, “California rejected Proposition 37 – which would have made it the first US state to require food companies to identify genetically modified (GM) ingredients – by 54 per cent to 46 per cent, according to the California Secretary of State’s website.” About a month prior to last night’s vote, the Los Angeles Times had reported 61 per cent of registered voters supported GM food labelling, while only 25 per cent opposed it. But corporations fought against this. CTV reported last month, “International food and chemical conglomerates, including Monsanto Co. and DuPont Co., have contributed about $35 million to defeat Proposition 37 on the November ballot.” An earlier campaign blog on this can be read at http://canadians.org/blog/?p=17081.
