The CanWest News Service reports this afternoon that, “The Federation of Canadian Municipalities voted Saturday to adopt a resolution urging cities to phase out both buying and selling bottled water in civic buildings and at city events.”
MORE CITIES TO FOLLOW
“The Council of Canadians says 27 municipalities across the country are currently phasing out or restricting the sale and purchase of bottled water in municipal buildings and at city events. The council, which lobbies governments to ensure water is a human right that should be free to all people, is confident all Canadian municipalities will follow suit.”
OPPORTUNITY TO EDUCATE ABOUT WATER AND TO INVEST IN INFRASTRUCTURE “Toronto councillor Pam McConnell says the resolution has broad potential. ‘It means that from coast to coast to coast we are going to be using this opportunity to educate people about the importance of the quality of their water, that they have an alternative to spending money that will save the environment, that will continue our good health. And that alternative is to use our own tap water…What was (also) clear to us is that we still have many of our municipalities on boil orders for their water. So this is also an opportunity for us to advocate for proper infrastructure money to make sure that as a first priority all municipalities have access to quality water.'”
