The Council of Canadians protests at the 2007 North American leaders summit.
The Canadian Press reports, “The White House says President Barack Obama will host Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Canada and President Felipe Calderon of Mexico for a North American summit in Washington in April.”
“The April 2 meeting is expected to focus on economic growth and competitiveness, security, energy and climate change. Obama, Harper and Calderon are also expected to discuss North America’s role in the upcoming Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia, later in April.”
“The last summit involving the three North American nations was held by Calderon in Guadalajara, Mexico, in August 2009.”
The Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) was launched at the March 2005 summit in Waco, Texas. The Council of Canadians then organized a major intervention against the SPP at the North American leaders summit in August 2007 in Montebello, Quebec. Maude Barlow, trade campaigner Stuart Trew and other civil society leaders attended the ‘New Orleans People’s Summit: Our Response to NAFTA Expansion and the SPP’ during the North American leaders summit in late-April 2008.
