It appears that the villagers in Madhya Pradesh have won their fight over the dams! On September 6, we asked that you sign a petition – also signed by the Council of Canadians and the Blue Planet Project – in support of the more than 130 villagers in Madhya Pradesh, India who have been standing in neck-deep water demanding a reduction in the water levels of the Omkareshwar dam and the Indira Sagar dam, http://canadians.org/blog/?p=16423. This morning, the Hindustan Times reports, “(After 17 days), the Madhya Pradesh dam deadlock has been resolved with state chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan agreeing to most of the demands of the protesters. The Madhya Pradesh chief minster has agreed to reduce the water-level in the Omkareshwar dam to 189 metres, according to media reports. The chief minister has also agreeed to set up a 5-member panel to review the demand of the local people in the next 90 days. …The chief minister has also agreeed to land for land demand of the protestors.” OneIndia adds, “The Madhya Pradesh chief minister is also expected to announce a similar package for the Indira Sagar Dam protesters.”
