An anti-fascist march in Athens.
The austerity measures that created the conditions for the growth of the fascist, anti-immigrant party Golden Dawn in Greece appear to have also spawned a Montreal chapter. The Montreal Gazette reports, “Organizers of the local chapter say they have more than 150 members, making it one of only two or three international branches existing in the world. …The move to set up outside chapters in places with large Greek diasporas like Montreal, New York and Australia is likely an attempt to raise funds, gain legitimacy and expand political influence, said Kyle Matthews, a professor at Concordia University’s Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies. …Quebec Facho-Watch has been monitoring the group’s activities and Facebook page, and notes that it has links to white supremacist groups.” The article also notes, “The party gained prominence in Greece’s parliamentary elections this summer, winning 18 out of 300 seats to become the fifth-largest party in the country. …Golden Dawn’s popularity is growing, despite the fact its members have been accused of beating several immigrants, denying elements of the Holocaust and sporting a logo that closely resembles a Nazi swastika.”
