CTV reports that, “Hundreds of people were protesting outside the Palais des Congres Sunday afternoon, in an effort to send a message to thousands of international delegates at the Montreal 2010 World Energy Congress. …Protesters, including members of Greenpeace, covered themselves in a sticky brown substance to make a visual point about the dangers of the world’s dependence on oil. …The group of activists said they want more emphasis on developing wind and solar power.”
The Toronto Sun adds that, “About 60 Greenpeace activists staged a Black Tide Beach Party, and 12 people donned oil-covered bathing suits, to protest the use of oil and to advocate for renewable energy options. As well, hundreds of people gathered outside the convention centre holding banners and signs that read, ‘Go beyond oil’. …Protesters were calling on a global ban on new exploration in the Arctic for oil and gas. The event participants also criticized the plans by Quebec Premier Jean Charest to allow exploration for oil and gas in the province.”
The Montreal Gazette reports that 400 people participated in the broader demonstration. Council of Canadians Board member Abdul Pirani and the Montreal chapter took part in Sunday’s demonstration against the World Energy Congress.
