NEWS: Patkar detained in protest against Pench water diversion project

Madhuresh Kumar writes on Facebook, “Just got the news that Medha Patkar, along with Mukesh Bhagoriya of NBA; Balram Burma, Rakesh, Devi Singh and others of Kisan Sangharsh Samiti forcefully evicted from Satyagraha site and now arrested in presence of SDM. Brought to Chindwara Kotwali. Total 22 people brought in four police jeeps to thana… Further news awaited..”

Daily News & Analysis reports this hour, “Noted social worker Medha Patkar was detained on Sunday for protesting against land acquisition for the Pench water diversion project, the police said. She was detained at the railway station when she insisted on proceeding to the venue of the protest, being organised by the Kisan Sangharsh Samiti (KSS). Meanwhile, KSS activists began a satyagraha protesting against land acquisition for the project. …Yesterday, KSS leader advocate Aradhana Bhargava was also arrested by the police in view of the protest.”

A National Alliance of People’s Movements media release explains, “The Pench Water Diversion Project involves construction of a 51 meter dam on Pench river, submerging 5600 Hectares of land of 31 villages. …PWDP today is to be constructed for supplying water to the Adani Pench Power Project (APPP), diverting water meant for the farmers.”
