New Delhi-based Blue Planet Project organizer Madhuresh Kumar highlights a Times of India news article that reports, “A high-level committee has cleared the detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed World Bank-funded Rs 300 crore ($65 million) drinking water supply project for Malkajgiri.”
Malkajgiri is a suburban locality in the city of Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, in India. It has a population of about 150,000 people.
According to the article, the DPR for the drinking water supply project was submitted by the German firm Lahmeyer. The DPR has now been sent to the World Bank to gain approval for its financial assistance. Once the World Bank gives its approval and the government gives its further administrative sanction, global tenders for the drinking water supply project will be floated.
Construction on the project is expected to begin in 2013 and to be completed by 2016.
Also noted in the Times of India article, officials have noted that the Malkajgiri project is linked to the Godavari drinking water project. The Godavari pipeline will pass through the Malkagiri area. The Godavari is a river in the south-central India. It starts in the western state of Maharashtra and flows through the modern state of Andhra Pradesh before reaching the Bay of Bengal.
