The Council of Canadians is gravely concerned by the lawsuit launched by Resolute Forest Products against Greenpeace Canada and its employees which seems to be a SLAPP suit (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) aimed at preventing legitimate criticism of Resolute’s conduct in the forests of Quebec. “Lawsuits without merit that are meant to bully people from exercising their rights must be stopped. There is no place for that type of conduct in our society” said Maude Barlow, National Chairperson of the Council of Canadians.
Resolute Forest Products must seek full, free, prior and informed consent from all First Nations communities in whose traditional territories they have operations or are sourcing forest products. Furthermore, Resolute must withdraw its lawsuit and focus on fixing problems with its forestry operations by working collaboratively with Greenpeace and other organizations seeking to help the industry become sustainable.
