The Council of Canadians South Shore chapter took part in an Act on Climate rally in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia yesterday.
The protest was in solidarity with the 25,000 gathered in Quebec City to call on provincial premiers to oppose the Energy East pipeline and the continued expansion of the tar sands and to commit to reduced carbon emissions and renewable energy strategies.
Their protest was particularly significant because Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil chose not to attend the premiers’ climate summit in Quebec City.
As Halifax-based Council of Canadians organizer Tori Ball recently noted, “On April 8, a coalition of 24 groups attempted to present Premier Stephen McNeil with a letter urging him to attend the Meeting of the Premiers. …[But] not only is McNeil opting out of being a part of this meeting, he (and his entire staff) showed a disregard for the people of Nova Scotia by not sparing two minutes of their day to receive a letter asking him to attend.”
That letter to Premier McNeil was signed by our South Shore, North Shore and Halifax chapters.
Activists with the Montreal, Fredericton, Moncton, York University, Toronto, Ottawa, Northumberland and Mid-Island chapters marched in Quebec City yesterday, while the Moncton, Halifax, South Shore, Toronto, Peterborough-Kawarthas, Chilliwack and Langley-Surrey-White Rock chapters took part in solidarity rallies.
