The Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union (CEP), the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), and the Council of Canadians have just issued a joint media release urging provincial premiers to ask Prime Minister Stephen Harper to meet with Chief Theresa Spence. Maude Barlow says, “Surely at this time of year, all our leaders must consider the human implications of allowing Chief Spence to die over political differences. We are urging the premiers to come forward to voice their support for a solution before a tragedy unfolds.” Chief Spence is now on the 14th day of her hunger strike. Barlow and CEP president Dave Coles met with Chief Spence yesterday in her teepee on Victoria Island, near Parliament Hill in Ottawa.
