UPDATE: The Council to attend a social forum exploratory committee meeting, Oct. 25

A first meeting of an exploratory committee for a Canada-Quebec-First Nations social forum will be held on Tuesday October 25 at 6 pm at Alternatives, 3720 Parc, 2nd Floor, in Montreal.

On October 11, a meeting was held in Montreal to discuss the idea of a social forum. That meeting decided that an exploratory committee was needed in order to look at the goals those assembled would like to achieve as well as to allow for a future discussion on whether a social forum is the best medium to advance those goals.

The organizations present then included: Alternatives, Amnistie Internationale, Association pour une solidarité Étudiante, ATTAC-Québec, Centrale des syndicats nationaux, Centre d’écologie urbaine de Montréal / Chantier sur la démocratie de la Ville de Montréal, Conseil central de Montréal (CSN), the Council of Canadians, Defenders of the Land/ Indigenous Environmental Network, Fédération des femmes du Québec, Fédération des travailleurs du Québec , Fédération interprofessionnelle de la santé du Québec, Fédération nationale des enseignants et enseignantes du Québec (FNEEQ-CSN), Femmes autochtones du Québec, Institut du Nouveau Monde, JUSTE, Regroupement des Centres d’amitié autochtones du Québec, Syndicat Canadien de l’Énergie et du Papier, Syndicat des employé(e)s de magasins et de bureaux de la SAQ, and YMCA du Québec.

The Council of Canadians has agreed to participate in tomorrow’s exploratory committee meeting.

It was also decided on October 11 that another meeting would take place the week of November 14 in Montreal to further explore the idea of a social forum, confirm if there is sufficient support to form an expansion commission (to outreach to more groups across Canada in preparation for a general assembly meeting that could launch a social forum process), and to hear back from tomorrow’s exploratory committee’s meeting.
