UPDATE: Council of Canadians announces 8-city Great Lakes speaking tour

The Council of Canadians is organizing a speaking tour to defend the Great Lakes as a commons, public trust and a protected bio-region.

The tour stops now confirmed are:

  • May 15 – Toronto
  • May 16 – Hamilton
  • May 17 – Thunder Bay
  • May 22 – Kingston
  • May 24 – Sarnia
  • May 28 – Tiny Township
  • May 29 – Owen Sound
  • May 30 – London

The tour was informally launched in Sault Ste. Marie (Lake Superior) in late-January, http://canadians.org/blog/?p=13244.

In partnership with FLOW, Food & Water Watch and On The Commons, we are also hoping to organize a special Detroit-Windsor (Lake Erie) tour stop in the coming months. The tour is also likely to visit US cities near Lake Michigan too. Additional Canadian cities may also be added for an additional leg of the tour this fall.

This past fall, the Council of Canadians colllected more than 100,000 signatures on a petition calling on the Ontario government to “stand up for the safety and protection of the public and our shared environment by banning all nuclear shipments on the Great Lakes.”
