The Council of Canadians joined with labour activists in Ottawa today for an afternoon rally in support of trade union rights in Mexico. Energy campaigner Andrea Harden-Donahue, Ottawa chapter activists Michael Vorobej and Jorge Escobar, and I took part in the rally outside the Mexican Embassy on O’Connor Street.
Labour leaders – including Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union president Dave Coles – reported to those gathered on their meeting with Mexican embassy officials inside. Coles said it was important to remember that we are linked to Mexico through a shared continent and the North American Free Trade Agreement and that violations of labour rights in Mexico are unacceptable.
