UPDATE: Council wins in 2009 (so far)

Council of Canadians chapter activists, Board members and staff have been working hard this year to secure important political wins.

The wins over the past six months include:

TRADE

WIN! Canada-Colombia FTA delayed until September (May 27, 2009)

NATIONAL WATER

WIN! FCM votes in favour of bottled water phase out (March 7, 2009)

WIN! Liberals back the human right to water (May 2, 2009)

WIN! London asks FCM to urge cities to ban bottled water (January 20, 2009)

And while 51 municipalities across Canada have now passed bottled water resolutions, many of which resulted from our win at the FCM, we were also directly involved in these wins this year:

WIN! Vancouver passes bottled water resolution (April 23, 2009)

WIN! Kingston one step closer to bottled water ban (May 13, 2009)

WIN! Ottawa Folk Festival stops selling bottled water (April 19, 2009)

WIN! Niagara Falls scraps bottled water (February 24, 2009)

BLUE PLANET PROJECT

WIN! More than 20 countries challenge World Water Forum declaration (March 22, 2009)

WIN! Water referendum appeal accepted by the Colombian Congress (May 29, 2009)

WIN! Shapleigh, Maine bans the selling of its water (March 1, 2009)

ENERGY

WIN! Ontario Mining Act reforms promised (April 30, 2009)

SECURITY AND PROSPERITY PARTNERSHIP

In the coming weeks we will comment more fully on our view that the Security and Prosperity Partnership initiative has been defeated, while noting that the deep integration agenda continues to pose a serious threat.
