UPDATE: Demonstration at the Canadian embassy in Copenhagen

The Council of Canadians will be joining the Indigenous Environmental Network, the Rainforest Action Network, the Indigenous Peoples Power Project, and the UK Tar Sands Group for a demonstration in front of the Canadian embassy tomorrow morning at 10:00 am (4:00 am EST).

The speakers will include Eriel Deranger and Susan Deranger of Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, Francois Paulette of Fort Smith First Nation, Council of Canadians chairperson Maude Barlow, author-activist Naomi Klein, and others.

The idea is to welcome Stephen Harper to Copenhagen with a gift basket of treaties and resources to help him meet his obligations at this conference.

The speakers will ‘welcome’ the prime minister to Copenhagen and ask him to:

  • stop being a roadblock to meaningful science based targets,
  • sign onto the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and recognize his responsibility to the First Nation treaties in Canada and his duty to free, prior and informed consultation,
  • recognize the tar sands are exacerbating climate change (largest single project with fastest growing emissions).

We will share photos and reports from tomorrow’s demonstration as it happens.
