Our ally MiningWatch Canada is holding its Annual General Meeting this afternoon in Ottawa.
The lunch has just wrapped up and we have been able to connect with friends from their organization, as well as CUPE National, PSAC, the Polaris Institute, ICLMG, SalvAide, Nature Canada, Carleton University, and other groups.
Roundtable discussions and presentations have just begun and will include:
– Undermining Development: CIDA, NGOs and the Extractive Sector
– Recipe for Disaster: The Battered Remnants of Environmental Assessment in Canada
The Council of Canadians is working with MiningWatch Canada to oppose Schedule 2 mine tailings being dumped into freshwater lakes (at both Fish Lake and Sandy Pond); to promote a stronger environmental assessment review process in Canada; in solidarity against the CAFTA investor-state challenge in El Salvador; to hold the ‘Shout Out Against Mining Injustice’ this June 1-2 in Vancouver, along with other key issues.
We congratulate MiningWatch Canada for their excellent work. For more on all that they do, please go to http://www.miningwatch.ca/.
