The Council of Canadians continues its efforts to defend Fish Lake from being drained and destroyed for mine waste.

A CTV television news report this evening includes John Dressler of the Williams Lake chapter of the Council of Canadians saying, “To endanger a whole watershed for a mining project that could be done in another way is not acceptable.”

The CTV report also notes, “Sources have told CTV News that the federal cabinet is divided on the issue and is delaying its decision on whether to approve the mine. It would be an unprecedented approval, given the serious environmental concerns raised in an environmental impact assessment. But the B.C. Conservative caucus — especially in the north — is said to be solidly in favour, because jobs in the forestry industry are disappearing.”

It has been reported that the decision about Fish Lake could be made as early as tomorrow (Friday September 10). But it may be that the decision is made on Monday September 13, as other news reports indicate that cabinet is meeting that day. If the decision is “delayed” as reported in this article, we will try to find out the new decision date (if possible) and increase our lobbying of the federal cabinet in the time that we have.
