On October 4, US activist-actor Daryl Hannah and East Texas ranch owner Eleanor Fairchild tried to stop the construction of TransCanada’s Keystone XL pipeline on expropriated land on Fairchild’s farm. A one-minute video of their action can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKqs7Fc45XM. Both Hannah and Fairchild were arrested and charged with trespassing. The ongoing tree blockade (endorsed by the Council of Canadians) against the pipeline is happening around nearby Winnsboro, about 100 miles east of Dallas. The video is posted on a webpage that notes, “Keystone XL will permanently bisect Mrs. Fairchild’s 300 acre ranch, which includes undeveloped wetland areas and natural springs producing over 400 gallons of fresh water per minute from her property.” The Associated Press reports, “TransCanada began construction of that portion of the pipeline this summer after receiving the necessary permits. Some Texas landowners, joined by activists from outside the state, have tried through various protests to stop or slow down construction.”
