Actions opposing Muskrat Falls project happening this Monday

Voices of Labrador’s land and water protectors to get a boost

K’JIPUKTUK (HALIFAX) – The people of Labrador opposing Muskrat Falls, tired of having their voices ignored, are happy with the response for a day of action at Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Monday May 7. Solidarity actions are happening in Halifax, St. John’s, Winnipeg, Mississauga and Goose Bay.

The Labrador Land Protectors, Grand Riverkeeper – Labrador, and others in downstream communities have been raising concerns about the Muskrat Falls project since it was announced. The project’s price tag is skyrocketing, but nothing is being done to protect the people, culture or environment downstream from the dam.

WHO: Elder Billy Lewis will do a land acknowledgement; speakers include Gretchen of the Sierra Club, Chris White of Solidarity Halifax, Angela of the Council of Canadians. Solidarity Halifax, the Council of Canadians, the Sierra Club Canada Foundation, the Ecology Action Centre and concerned individuals are organizing the event.

WHAT: A rally with speakers and visuals, highlighting concerns about the Muskrat Falls project and calling on Emera to use its involvement in this project to push for action on these concerns.

WHEN: Monday, May 7, 2018 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

WHERE: Outside of the Emera office at 1223 Lower Water St.

WHY: To show solidarity with the day of action in Ottawa and for the people of Labrador. The rally is taking place in front of the Emera office to highlight the Maritime Link connection. We’re calling on Emera to endorse the recommendations by the Independent Expert Advisory Committee, including the call for vegetation removal of the reservoir area prior to flooding.
