Canada-China FIPA: “We Stand Together” rally and tour supports First Nation legal challenge to controversial investment treaty

We Stand TogetherWHAT: Brenda Sayers, a representative of Hupacasath First Nation (Vancouver Island), will speak at a rally on Parliament Hill and at events across Ontario and Quebec to gather support for a First Nations legal challenge to the Canada-China Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA), which has been signed but not yet ratified by the federal government. The Hupacasath case, which was heard in federal court June 5-7, argues the federal government is required to consult First Nations before ratifying treaties like the FIPA.

OTTAWA RALLY: Sunday, August 11, 1-3 p.m. on Parliament Hill (speakers list below)

TOUR: August 10 – 17, 2013 in Montreal (August 10), Ottawa (August 11-12), Kingston and Tyendinaga (August 13), Peterborough (August 14), Hamilton (August 15), Toronto (August 16-17)

WHO: Sayers’ tour is supported by the Council of Canadians, Idle No More, Leadnow, KAIROS, Common Frontiers, Canadian Union of Postal Workers, Attac-Quebec, Trade Justice Network, Ottawa & District Labour Council, and the Latin America and Caribbean Solidarity Network (LACSN).
