The Council of Canadians is available for comment on Bill C-33, introduced today. If passed, it appears that the bill would repeal undemocratic elements of the so-called Fair Elections Act, which the Council has campaigned against and challenged in court.
The Council, along with the Canadian Federation of Students, launched a legal challenge against provisions of the Fair Elections Act that restricted voting rights, including prohibiting the Voter Information Card as valid ID for voting, eliminating vouching, restricting the Chief Electoral Officer’s ability to communicate with voters, and transferring the Commissioner of Canada Elections to the Public Prosecution Service of Canada.
