Council of Canadians available to comment on World Water Day federal budget

The Trudeau government’s first federal budget will be released on World Water Day. The Council of Canadians has called on the government to address key water priorities and is available for comment on whether the budget measures up.

In Alternative Federal Budget 2016: It’s time to move on, the Council outlines why $7.4 billion should be allocated to protecting drinking water and freshwater sources. The Council is calling on the federal government to create a Minister of Water in cabinet to carry out this urgently needed expansion of water protections.

“The Trudeau government campaigned on addressing some very serious and long-standing water issues leading up to the last election. Having a federal budget that protects the human right to water is long overdue,” says Emma Lui, water campaigner for the Council of Canadians. “From the government’s commitment to ending First Nations drinking water advisories to restoring freshwater protections, tomorrow's World Water Day budget will show how committed the Trudeau government is to seeing through its promises.”
