The Rio+20 Earth Summit has failed to produce the commitments needed for a more just and sustainable future for the planet.
The Council of Canadians denounces the role that Canada has played in this outcome at these critical United Nations negotiations.
Canada has been widely recognized as being the most obstructionist and pro-corporate of any government at this Earth Summit.
“For Canadian Environment Minister Peter Kent to hold a press conference in Rio to celebrate Canada's role at these talks is shameless,” says Blue Planet Project organizer Anil Naidoo.
The passage of C-38 by the Harper government this week represents an unprecedented attack on environmental protection laws in Canada.
“Kent must answer for his role in razing Canada's environmental laws and for spreading this ideology at the Rio+20 negotiations,” adds Naidoo.
