Council of Canadians to present at Parliamentary trade committee on Canada-EU deal

At today’s session of the Standing Committee on International Trade, Council of Canadians trade campaigner Stuart Trew will highlight growing opposition to central features of CETA (the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement).

WHAT: Trew will be discussing (remotely from Toronto) the Council of Canadians’ recent report, Trade with Europe…. But Not at Any Cost. The report, based on Environics Research polling, shows that while support is high in general for a Canada-EU deal, a majority of Canadians opposes key provisions in the multinational corporate rights pact. These provisions include municipal governments losing the right to prefer Canadian or local firms when spending public money; the extension of patents on brand name drugs; and giving EU firms NAFTA-like rights to sue Canada through investor-to-state arbitration.

WHEN: 11am – 12pm, Tuesday, January 28, 2014

WHERE: 306 La Promenade, Room: 306, 151 Sparks Street, Ottawa
