Defeat of fast track: Not business as usual for the TPP

Reacting to today’s vote in the U.S. against Obama’s fast-track authority for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), Maude Barlow, national chairperson of the Council of Canadians, said: “This is a victory for global democracy. Organized citizens can and will defeat trade agreements. We are seeing this in the U.S., in Europe and in Canada.”

Without fast-track authority, Obama will be hard-pressed to pass the agreement through the U.S. Congress. Canada is one of 12 nations negotiating the TPP.
