WHAT: The Council of Canadians is hosting an emergency rally in response to Finance Minister Morneau’s announcement that the federal government is ready to use public money to indemnify the Kinder Morgan pipeline project.
In addition to speakers, there will be a visual of a large blank cheque to the Texas-based oil company.
RALLY SPEAKERS:
- Territorial welcome from Elder Verna McGregor, Algonquin Community of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg
- Chief Robert Chamberlin, OWADI, Vice President, Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs, live from B.C.
- Jagmeet Singh, Leader of the NDP
- Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada
- Maude Barlow, Honorary Chairperson of the Council of Canadians
WHERE: Parliament Hill front steps.
WHEN: Tuesday, May 22 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
WHY: The proposed bail out breaks the Trudeau government’s promise to phase out fossil fuel subsidies. There is now evidence the Liberals were setting in motion a plan to say yes to the pipeline even while consulting with Indigenous peoples and the public. The Liberal interim measures did not do enough to fix the Harper era broken National Energy Board review in assessing the project’s impacts on Indigenous rights, our climate and spills. The opposition to the Kinder Morgan pipeline is growing.
