Environment Ministers’ climate talks must address pipeline “elephant in the room”

OTTAWA – While federal, provincial and territorial Environment Ministers meet in Ottawa Friday to discuss the framework for negotiations on a national climate policy, the Council of Canadians will send a reminder that new oil pipelines are heading in the wrong direction for Canada. The approval of Kinder Morgan’s TransMountain Expansion and TransCanada’s Energy East projects threaten to collectively unleash 45.4 million tonnes of climate pollution annually. This is more than annual emissions of 8 provinces and territories. It is the equivalent of adding 9.7 million cars to the road.  It is inconsistent with our government's support for a 1.5 degree limit on global warming declared at the UN climate talks in Paris.
