Increased youth voter turnout a victory for democracy and social movements

The Council of Canadians is thrilled to see the report today from Elections Canada showing a dramatic increase in youth voter turnout.

“This is great news and it didn’t happen by accident. Young people voted in record numbers because of successful on-the-ground organizing in ridings across the country to increase voter turnout,” says Brigette DePape, who was the Council of Canadians’ Youth Vote Campaigner during the 2015 election. “The Council of Canadians, its local chapters and allied organizations mobilized thousands of young voters and people of all ages to get to the polls in ridings from coast to coast. Together we changed the game.”

The Council is calling on the government to follow through on its promise to repeal the so-called Fair Elections Act, which remains a barrier to voting for many people.
