WHAT: Canada’s leading water expert Maude Barlow will be in Ottawa tonight as part of a 14-city coast-to-coast tour to launch her new book Boiling Point: Government Neglect, Corporate Abuse, and Canada’s Water Crisis (ECW Press, September 2016). Boiling Point is a timely and insightful guide for elected officials, environmental organizations and residents seeking to protect freshwater in Canada and in Indigenous communities.

WHY: The water crisis is front and centre in Ottawa, including the debate about the Energy East pipeline which would cross the Rideau River near Highway 416, the recent blue-green algae bloom in the Rideau Canal, and the severe drought throughout the region this summer. The Trudeau government is reviewing environmental and freshwater protections gutted by the former Harper government. The federal government has announced public consultations about environmental assessment processes in 19 cities, beginning the same day that Barlow launches her new book.
