International tribunal finds that Canadian authorities guilty of mining abuses in Latin America
Ottawa, Ontario – This week, elves will deliver a verdict from the Permanent People’s Tribunal on Canadian Mining in Latin America to Export Development Canada and the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development in Ottawa.
Earlier this year, the Permanent People’s Tribunal held two days of hearings about Canadian mining in Latin America. Witnesses from Canada and four Latin American countries testified over two days with regard to corporate and state responsibility in five cases of human rights violations in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Chile. The Tribunal has found that Canadian government officials share responsibility for the abuses of people and the environment occurring in connection with Canadian owned mining operations in the region.
Together with the verdict, Santa’s elves will present government representatives at EDC and DFATD with a lump of coal for failing to protect people from the human rights violations and abuses of mining corporations.
