The first round of “Take Back the Power” community meetings has now wrapped, with eight events held across Nova Scotia. From Lower Sackville, Bridgewater, Annapolis Royal, and Wolfville, to Truro, Amherst, and Halifax, people came together to talk about our electricity system and what needs to change.
Across every stop on the tour, people spoke about rising electricity costs, concerns about reliability, and the growing pressure these issues are placing on households. Many shared personal stories about the difficult choices they are making to keep up with growing power bills, prompting broader conversations about who our electricity system is designed to serve.
Nova Scotia Power is a private monopoly responsible for delivering an essential service. Many of the challenges we are currently facing are the direct results of this ownership model. Our campaign is focused on renationalizing Nova Scotia Power because we believe our electricity system should exist to serve people, not shareholders.
Each community meeting created space for participants to identify ways to build momentum for change locally. In several communities, this has already led to ongoing organizing efforts, petition signature collection, and conversations about next steps.
This first round of events is just the beginning. We’ll be hosting another round of events in about six months time. Interested in being part of organizing a meeting in your community?
Nova Scotians can choose an energy system that puts people first; one that keeps electricity affordable, improves reliability during storms, supports climate action, and is accountable to the public. Here’s what you can do to get us closer to this goal:
- Print our petition to collect signatures in your community.
- Send an email to Premier Houston.
- Share your story by completing our public survey.
- Sign up to organize a meeting in your community.
Each of these actions strengthens the call for change. Together, we can build an electricity system in Nova Scotia that works for people, not profits.
