Council of Canadians announces Shout Out for Global Justice, June 25, Convocation Hall, Toronto

Today the Council of Canadians announced a major event in Toronto on June 25 at the end of the G8 Summit in Huntsville and on the eve of the G20 Summit in Toronto. ‘Shout Out for Global Justice’ will feature an evening of entertainment and high profile global social justice leaders. The event will bring people together from throughout Toronto, across Canada, and around the world to demand climate, water, trade and social justice, as a counterpoint to the closed-door nature of the G8 and G20 Summits. For more information about the event, visit: http://canadians.org/g20/event.html

The Council of Canadians argues that the G8 and G20 lack legitimacy to make decisions on global economic, climate or trade cooperation. The Council asserts that G8 and G20 Summits undermine efforts to reach international consensus through the UN General Assembly, a more legitimate decision-making body.

The Council of Canadians will also be participating in workshops and forums at the People’s Summit taking place in Toronto the weekend of June 18-20. In the lead up to the G8 and G20 meetings, the Council of Canadians will be advocating for a response to the economic crisis based on water, climate, trade, and social justice. Information about the People’s Summit can be seen at: http://peoplessummit2010.ca and other information about activities in Toronto around the G8 and G20 Summits can be seen at: http://g20.torontomobilize.org/.

Looking forward to seeing you there!
