The Globe and Mail reports, “Ontario’s government is set to intervene to help preserve the freshwater research station controversially shuttered by the federal government. Sources say that the province’s role involves transferring control of the Experimental Lakes Area, situated in Northern Ontario, from the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans to the International Institute for Sustainable Development, a Winnipeg-based United Nations think tank. …Premier Kathleen Wynne is scheduled to make an announcement at the University of Toronto on Wednesday morning alongside her Environment Minister, Jim Bradley, and Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Laurel Broten. …The closure has been portrayed by critics of the federal government as part of a broader attack on environmental science research, driven more by ideological than financial considerations, and possibly motivated by the facility’s work to investigate the aquatic effects of climate change.”
The Council of Canadians has campaigned extensively to stop the closure of the ELA by the Harper government.
More to come.
