UPDATE: Major dams prompt concerns around the world

The Council of Canadians/ Blue Planet Project has been raising concerns about numerous major dam projects around the world.

In Mexico, Claudia Campero Arena has campaigned against the Zapotillo dam, http://canadians.org/blog/?p=16473; in India, Madhuresh Kumar has written about the Mullaperiyar dam, http://canadians.org/blog/?p=12735, the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti dam, http://canadians.org/blog/?p=12963, and the Omkareshwar and Indira Sagar dams, http://canadians.org/blog/?p=16493.

Over the years, we have also raised concerns about the HidroAysen dams in Chile, http://canadians.org/blog/?p=15531; the Urrá I dam in Colombia (that Kimy Pernia Domico opposed), http://canadians.org/blog/?p=9307; the Cambalan dam in Guatemala, http://canadians.org/blog/?p=14949; the Ilisu dam in Turkey, http://canadians.org/blog/?p=14806; the Four Rivers dams in Korea, http://canadians.org/blog/?p=10999; and the dams on the Murray-Darling in Australia, http://canadians.org/blog/?p=12398.

And in Canada we’ve monitored the proposed Site C dam in British Columbia, http://canadians.org/blog/?p=9221; the La Romaine dams in Quebec, http://canadians.org/blog/?p=14637; the dams planned for Ontario’s Far North, http://canadians.org/blog/?p=9378; and the proposed Muskrat Falls and Gull Island dams in Newfoundland and Labrador. It should be added that from the Ontario-Quebec border to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, there are only three major or mid-size rivers that have not been dammed for electric power. Along with impact these dams have on rivers, natural eco-systems and wildlife, hydro reservoirs across Canada emit as much as one million tonnes of greenhouse gases each year.

To read Maude Barlow nine-point critique of major dams please see, http://canadians.org/blog/?p=6779. This coming November 5-7, she will be participating in a Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal session that will investigate the impact that the Zapotillo dam would have on the communities of Temacapulín, Acasico and Palmarejo in Mexico.
