Occupy Edmonton has won!
This morning, the Edmonton Journal reports, “Occupy Edmonton protesters were in jubilant spirits late Sunday night, after an impending 11 p.m. eviction deadline passed without incident. Shortly after the deadline, organizer Chelsea Taylor announced the achievement to the more than 100 protesters who had gathered in anticipation of the eviction. …All around, demonstrators hugged and high-fived, while the Raging Grannies led the crowd in singing O Canada.”
“More than 2,700 people had signed an online petition to ‘stop the eviction of Occupy Edmonton’ by Sunday night.”
“‘It’s good (not to be evicted). It’s not surprising since there’s so much support behind this movement. There’s a lot of people here,’ said the Grant MacEwan University student.”
Rather than packing up and leaving, the Occupation sent a letter to Melcor, the company that ‘owns’ the park, explaining their position. “(Taylor says), ‘They informed us that they did receive the letter and were reviewing it and will be in contact with us on Monday.’ Demonstrators have taken that to mean they’ll be able to stay at the camp until at least Monday morning.”
Thank you to everyone who helped Occupy Edmonton win!
