Without warning, the Harper government is ramming an Unfair Elections Act through Parliament that will seriously undermine democracy in Canada. It was just introduced a few days ago, but could be adopted by the House of Commons as early as Monday or Tuesday.
WHAT: Canadians will be holding a mass coast-to-coast call-in to Conservative Members of Parliament, including a gathering on Parliament Hill where participants are encouraged to bring their cell phones. Participants outside Ottawa are encouraged to join the synchronized action by calling the Conservative MP closest to their riding from 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. EST.
WHEN: Starting at 12:30 p.m. EST, Monday February 10. At 1:00 p.m. Craig Scott, Official Opposition Critic for Democratic and Parliamentary Reform, will receive the petition for it to be tabled in Parliament. The petition is available here.
WHERE: By the Centennial Flame on Parliament Hill in Ottawa and from coast to coast to coast
WHO: The action is organized by the Council of Canadians and the Canadian Federation of Students.
HARPER’S UNFAIR ELECTIONS ACT:
- would make it harder for people to vote
- aims to suppress the vote of groups that may not vote Conservative including students, Indigenous people, seniors, and people on low-incomes.
- does nothing to bring to justice the people behind the widespread election fraud in 2011
- would actually make it harder to catch perpetrators of election fraud like Pierre Poutine
